Newsletter 1/24: Monthly workshops

The UCT Irma Stern™ Museum is a space for creativity, encompassing the artistic expressions of Irma Stern, the diverse talents showcased in her collected works, as well as the creative endeavours of invited artists, students, learners, and the enchanting Secret Garden itself.

Once again, we extend a warm invitation for you to bring your own creativity into the ISM by participating in our monthly Art Classes at the Museum held on the second Saturday of each month, commencing on March 9, 2024. The details of the art classes are as follows:

  • Time: 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
  • Cost: R 150 per person per session
  • Suitable for all ages
  • Materials will be provided
  • Tickets must be purchased on Quicket

Our facilitators for this year are accomplished and practising artists, each bringing their unique skills to the classroom. The classes will be conducted by Pia Truscott, Zimkhitha Mliswa, Sitaara Stodel and Nicole Clare Fraser.

Pia Truscott, a full-time artist residing in Cape Town, graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art (2022) and has exhibited her work in prominent exhibitions, including FNB Art Joburg in 2023. Pia is passionate about sharing her skills, fostering curiosity, and finding joy in the art-making process. She also serves as a community arts facilitator for the Butterfly Art Project.

Zimkhitha Mliswa, a Visual Arts educator at Battswood Arts Centre, has been hosting Saturday Art Classes at the Irma Stern Museum since 2023. With an undergraduate degree in Fine Art and a PGCE from the University of Johannesburg, Zimkhitha is currently pursuing her BA Honours in Visual Arts Illustration. She brings a wealth of international teaching experience and a commitment to equality in education.

Sitaara Stodel, a contemporary artist based in Cape Town, graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2014. Awarded the Tierney Fellowship, she has participated in exhibitions at prestigious venues, such as Zeitz MOCAA, SMAC Gallery, Everard Read, and Stevenson. Currently working as the technical officer of photography at Michaelis, Sitaara is a master’s student with expertise in various analogue photographic methods.

Nicole Clare Fraser, an image maker and artist in Cape Town, specialises in photographic practice exploring human presence, absence, loneliness, and tenderness. Holding an MFA and BAFA from Michaelis School of Fine Art, Nicole also lectures on darkroom techniques and printing. Her solo shows include “Making Space: Traces of Absence, Stillness, and the In-Between in Public Spaces” (2021), among others.

Join us at the UCT Irma Stern Museum in 2024 to embrace and enhance your artistic journey with these accomplished presenters.

Due to high demand, the art class scheduled for March 9th is now fully booked. You can find the link to the April 13th class here: https://qkt.io/6Eqgoj. Stay tuned on Instagram for updates on additional art classes as the dates approach.
