Mondays at the Irma Stern™ Museum are extra special days – this is the day when the museum hosts workshops for learners with special educational needs. Our main partnership school is Glenbridge Special School, and their 8 to 11-year-olds always amaze us with their creativity and enthusiasm for artmaking.
At the museum the learners create freely in a non-judgemental space, looking at Irma Stern’s work as an inspiration for their own art. The lessons are designed in a way that encourages each learner to explore and expand their abilities while having fun at the same time.
Learners with barriers to learning are often overlooked and marginalised in society – seeing their work displayed in the museum is a moment of pride, appreciation, and validation for all the learners involved, as well as their parents and teachers.
