Newsletter 4/24: Good things are in bloom!

As spring returns to Cape Town, the Irma Stern™ Museum has much to celebrate!

Rethinking Irma Stern: For the past three years, the UCT Irma Stern Museum has partnered with the Western Cape Education Department on an exciting project with Grade 11 Visual Art & Design learners across the province. The project, titled “Rethinking Irma Stern,” inspired students to engage critically with the work of Irma Stern, creating their own artworks and designs in response to her collection. Some of these learners had the pleasure of attending the museum’s guided tours and practical workshops. The exhibition was open to the public from 28 August – 28 September.

Cape Baroque Concert kicks off at the Museum: Variations, an award-winning programme, was hosted by the Irma Stern Museum on Saturday, 21 September. Members of the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra, Ralitza Macheva (baroque violin), Erik Dippenaar (harpsichord) and Lynelle Kenned (soprano) presented a programme of expressive sets of variations from the baroque, including music by Corelli, Caccini, Byrd, Philips and Handel. A popular genre during the Baroque period was so-called ‘sets of variations’ or ‘divisions’, where composers created variations and embellishments on songs, folk melodies or hymns.

Drumming at the Irma Stern Museum: We welcomed the Rainbow Foundation, which collaborates with the international organisation Breaking Walls. A key highlight of this peace-building initiative camp is the opportunity to drum with Bevil from Drumba. This initiative combines art, theatre, and culture, making it a joyful experience for our three diverse youth groups from Cape Town to drum at the esteemed Irma Stern Museum.
