Undated. Cement, 58.5 x 45 cm
Mbulelo Peter, custodian and guide at the Irma Stern Museum:
Although Irma Stern is widely recognised for her love of and dedication to painting, she also contributed hugely in the art world through the sculptures she made. Irma Stern as a sculptor is generally less known and celebrated, and some people are not even aware that she created stone carvings and numerous large-scale cement and clay artworks.
Her studio at The Firs gives testimony to the above. When you enter her studio, at first glance, you see her clay potter’s wheel. Taking a break from her paintings, she would explore making ceramics and carved stone sculptures. I take my hat off to her as I celebrate her prestigious output.
